Does "meaning( artificial life ) = meaning( artificial ) + meaning( life )" ?

  • Is artificial life a paradoxical conjunction?
  • Has artificial life moved beyond term expansion?

Is artificial life meaningless without reference to existing projects?

How does the history of artificial life help the meaning?

Will artificial life evolve into life as the meanings of all these terms change?

Has the meaning of artificial life suffered under the many kinds of artificial life? ( Hard, soft, wet and dry)

How do we communicate the term with such an ethereal meaning?

User:GeraldDeJong:

Does alife exist today? (this precludes a few of the above questions and brings the definition issues down to earth)

Should the phrase "artificial life" be used twice in a single question?  :)

Looking through the questions above, I couldn't see one that would be eliminated if artificial life was an aspiration versus a reality. This only simplifies the problem if you argue in the negative. I'm sure there are a few through the mailing list would argue in the affirmative. So... I don't know where that leaves the does artificial life exist.

As the questions will never be read out-loud, the form they take should be simple for us to nod to as the discussion evolves. I have however cut the duplicate uses, if this is more clear to people.

User:Miriam: Depending on the meaning of the word "meaning" (heh), the meaning of artificial life may be exactly the same as the meaning of natural life: that it is defined by itself. Life is simply its own reason for being. Life is a circular thing because it procreates. People (artists, scientists, programmers, religious people) may add further meanings, but they are additional, not intrinsic to life.

User:Barbalet:

This is exactly my point with the question Will artificial life evolve into life as the meanings of all these terms change?
